GROUNDWORK
A free resource efficiency audit of Protocol Skills, carried out by Groundwork advisor Tracey Birch, highlighted ways they could save money and reduce their carbon footprint. More
The Environment Agency is now participating in the implementation of the CRC scheme to increase energy reduction in organisations.
The initial requirement is for organisations to recognise if they qualify for registration with the Environment Agency for full participation in the scheme. This is required if they have an electricity consumption of 6,000,000 kwh or higher. More

1.
Take advantage of the Carbon Trust Loans to replace energy using devices.
2.
Use the Enhanced Capital Allowances register to select energy efficient equipment when upgrading onsite (this also has financial advantages by allowing you to offset the cost of supply and installation against your tax for that financial year)
3.
Keep doors shut - an open factory door can cost £15 per hour.
4.
Lower emissions from space heating by lowering thermostats - lowering by 1oC can lead to a 10 per cent reduction in carbon emissions.
5. Try to have a full load for the return journey - consider joining a scheme such as www.shiply.com who allow hauliers to search for deliveries along routes they are already driving so there are fewer empty lorries on the road (empty lorries produce around 36 million tonnes of CO2 every year).
BUSINESSES turning over £2m and handling 50 tons of packaging a year are reminded that they must comply with producer responsibility waste packaging regulations.
Firms are required to register with the Environment Agency or a Compliance Scheme, and then recover and recycle a percentage of the packaging they handle. Each business is required to collate data about the weight and type of packaging it handled so that it can acquire packaging waste recovery notes to prove it has recovered/recycled its obligation.
